Children are not unlike us big people, when you return home from a long day at the office; you will not want to start your work again right away.  Kids feel the same about homework.

When your children return from school, allow them a little down time before you get them to start their homework.  Let them chill out watch a little TV and have a light snack.

Then, allow them a choice, ask them if they prefer to do their homework before dinner or after dinner.  Next, find ways to make homework fun.  If it’s math, use their snack as part of the counting – for example; here we have three grapes now eat two. How many we have now?

If you need to ask them to bring things from the fridge, use this as a math tool – “could you

go bring me two oranges from the fridge, now put 1 back – how many do we have now?”

If they are older, allow them to bring a buddy over

to help – you will find that they will be more interested if they have a friend around.  Keep an eye on them so you know that they are doing their homework and not horsing around.  You also need to keep an eye out for any cheating!  If one child knows the answer, you can bet the other will be more than happy to just copy it rather than learn it on their own.

Finally, you should also approach helping with homework when you are refreshed and not too tired or burnt out – you will find that you have more patience and understanding.

It so easy to make homework fun and we want the kids to enjoy education not think of it as a “chore”.
